Sitting with Yourself in the Presence of God

Writer's picture: Rachael PattersonRachael Patterson
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Psalms‬ ‭139:23-24‬

Sometimes it’s necessary to sit with the parts of us we don’t like and examine them. I don’t mean in a pessimistic, “I’m a failure and look at how awful I am” kind of way. I mean in a way that is in direct correlation with the verse above. A way that says, “Lord, there are things about me that do not reflect your character and I need help figuring out what that is so I can grow closer to you.”

And guess what? God most definitely will point it out to you. And it will make you squirm a little, because no one wants their dirty laundry aired out and exposed, but in the presence of the Lord, what is dirty becomes clean. What has been hidden in the dark, is exposed to light.

Friends, God already knows you. Knows you down to the smallest cell in your body, knows you. Knows your heart so well that He knows every beat it will ever take, knows you. This verse isn’t us asking God to figure us out, He already knows us. This verse is asking God to make it known to us so WE can implement the changes through His Holy Spirit.

When we make a choice to let God expose us to ourselves and we sit in that and let God work in our hearts and minds, we will grow closer to Him and experience the ever-lasting life He promised us now. We do not have to wait for Heaven to experience everlasting life, sweet friend. It’s already here.

We just have to let the Lord examine us and then show us what He finds so we can grow towards Him.

Love,

Rachael
